Today in God’s Word

June 17, 1 Corinthians 16

“Life coaching” is a popular form of personal counseling. Clients pay their life coach to help them form and follow a plan to maximize performance and reach goals.

The apostle Paul wore many hats in his career. He was an evangelist, a missionary and a master theologian. But much of his writing was application-oriented, filled with the kind of guidance a wise life coach might give clients to help them succeed.

In this exclusive interview with The Abiding Companion (OK, I got it from today’s portion), Paul shares inspired wisdom about a variety of life topics.

Abiding Companion (AC): Paul, could you share some pointers about handling money wisely, especially other people’s money?

Paul: Obey the law of accumulation. Put a little aside each week to accumulate a nest egg. Each contribution doesn’t seem like much, but it gradually becomes far more than you’d have at any one time. Unfortunately, the law of accumulation also works for debt. When you spend a little more than you make each pay period, those little sips of the credit card kool-aid add up to a staggering amount of indebtedness.

When handling other people’s money, obey the law of accountability. Be honest and open about every penny. Involve the givers in the administration of the funds. Let the contributors select a representative to share the responsibility.

AC: You have accomplished so much. How about some tips for getting things done?

Paul: Always have a plan. Under the umbrella of God’s will, write down your intentions, and act on the plan. I always have an itinerary. Invest in your people by spending time with them, and helping them reach their goals. Show respect for them and recognize their accomplishments.

Do what needs to be done today. Planning for the future is fine and necessary; it does not replace doing today’s work today. Seize present opportunities with optimism. Be realistic about obstacles in the way of success, and meet them head on.

AC: Can you summarize a life plan for maturing disciples, maybe just a “bullet list”?

Paul: Sure. I do that when I’m closing a letter and still have so much to tell the people. Here’s a good check list for a disciple’s life: Be alert and on guard at all times. Be well-grounded in what you believe. Keep trusting the Lord. Grow up! Overcome immaturity in your thinking, talking and actions. Act from strength, but remember the strength comes from the Lord. Do everything in love; it’s the highest and best motive.

AC: Let’s close with a comment about the motivational factors that work best for you and the disciples you’re mentoring.

Paul: Look forward to Jesus’ promised return; that will clarify your priorities and keep you on track. Rejoice in the grace you’ve been shown, and remember to share it with others. Love each other; cherish and honor your relationships.

AC: Thanks, Paul.

Paul: It’s my pleasure. Send my greetings to your readers, until I can hug them in heaven.
