Today in God’s Word

June 18, 2 Corinthians 1

The heat is oppressive. He’s gotten used to the sandy grit and the blinding glare. He is in danger, but he’s more concerned for the folks back home than for himself. He misses his wife and children. He missed the baby’s first birthday last month, and next week he’ll miss celebrating his fifth wedding anniversary. There’s plenty to eat, but it’s not like Momma’s table during the holidays. Thanks to technology, he’s in touch by e-mail every day, on the phone regularly and sometimes face-to-face (sort of) via video conference. He’s glad to do his duty and honored to serve his country. But he’s lonely for home.

When the package arrives, the heat, grit, glare, danger and even the loneliness lose some of their oppressive power for awhile. He cuts through the tape and peers into the box. Some of his favorite comfort foods are there, accompanied by travel-sized containers of body powder, portable packs of handy-wipes, mouthwash and other little personal comfort items—luxuries in this inhospitable place so far from home. The practical gifts sent by thoughtful loved ones comfort him. And he does what perhaps only those who’ve been in a similar situation can understand—he shares the little treats and goodies from home with others in his unit. The comforted one becomes the comforter as the blessings are shared.

In the normal adversity that is part of life, our Father is “the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our afflictions.” And like Paul, we are blessed to be able to bless those around us with the comfort we’ve received. We are not vaccinated against trouble when we become Christians. But we do know the source of real comfort, and we can share in his great ministry of comfort by passing it on to others.

God is also the source of deliverance in affliction. When Paul thought he was going to die, he learned to rely on God who raises the dead. When we are pressed to the limit and hardship is at its worst, we learn to trust him to deliver us when we cannot save ourselves. In such dire straits we learn to appreciate the prayers offered for us, and God’s faithful response to those prayers.

God is also our source of certainty in an uncertain world. When your confidence has been shaken by unpredictable and uncontrollable circumstances, it’s good to know God is not a God of doublespeak. His “Yes” means “Yes” and his “No” means “No.” Experts say parents raising children need to be consistent and keep their promises. Father God is ultimately faithful. Through Jesus, every promise God ever made is going to be kept. His spirit within us guarantees his faithfulness.

Plans and agendas may change; we may not know what God is doing, or why he’s waiting so long. But we may rest assured that our source of soothing comfort, sure deliverance and certain confidence is faithful.
